  • Already active or “rooted” in the community they want to support

  • Driven to make a positive difference

  • In need of financial help to launch or scale up their work

Addressing the needs of your community

Here are some examples of projects that could address a specific need within your community.

You might:

  • create a community that shares and swaps resources (electric tools, clothes, books etc) in a bid to reduce waste

  • set up a board game night for disabled people in York and need some money to buy the initial board games.

  • have experience as a single mother of the challenges of getting back into the work place and would like to set up a peer support group to support each other to write CVs and practice interview skills.

We are really excited to hear your ideas and about the amazing grassroots work that is going on in York.

What are the perks?

Every person selected to pitch will get two free tickets to STEW. One for the presenter and another for someone to support them. This will give each of you a vote and a bowl of delicious stew!

We will also be asking attendees to write down what was great about each of three pitches on our custom made 'Appreciation Cards'. We will then gather all the cards together and share them with the pitchers after the event.

If you'd like to come along to STEW whether you're pitching or not, we urge you to buy a ticket in order to save a seat. Once you are confirmed as a pitcher, we will refund you the cost of your ticket.

Criteria to pitch

Criteria

We want to create an environment that enables groups and individuals who are typically excluded from traditional funding schemes.

To apply, your project must meet all the following criteria.

1. Addressing an issue affecting your community This could mean you are delivering a project that directly meets the needs of the community or tackles the root causes of that need.

2. Not for profit We accept applications from individuals as well as groups. In both instances, the project must be not-for-profit. If you are applying on behalf of an organisation the annual income must be under £10,000. We welcome applications from unregistered groups (i.e organisations that are not-for-profit and are not registered charities or community interest companies). If you are applying as an individual and there is an issue around benefits please talk to us and we will look at how we can make this work for you.

3. Based within York To pitch at STEW, your project must be based within and benefiting the City of York.

4. Able to talk about your involvement. We want to know how you identified the need that your project/group is trying to address. We're also really interested in hearing how you are actively involved with or “rooted” within the community that you aim to serve.
