Members will be asked to:
Some basic information...
-
Meet with us once a month.
Meetings usually lasts 2-3 hrs and are in-person in York.

-
Potentially participate in sub-groups or to provide assistance with particular projects where they have relevant experience / skills. We will consider time required for such projects and look to compensate members where possible.

-
Be part of the group for 2 years, after which their role will be up for review.

-
Undertake additional training or skills development as part of their inductions / ongoing in their role. We will seek to support members and help address any skills or training gaps that they themselves identify.
We will share the membership policy, our constitution, and any other relevant materials with members as part of the induction / recruitment process.
What you’ll be doing...

Members will have discussions about our strategy as a group, what we want to do and importantly, how.
We are anticipating to start engaging in events and a participatory grant making process in 2024, so members will be key to shaping what this looks like and what we prioritise as a group.

Our hope is that this group does not become what many of us have experienced in York - ego-driven and hierarchical spaces, where power is held in the same systems and decisions are made without the participation of the community.
Members are responsible for ensuring that we stay on track, that we do what we say we’ll do - and that we make progress in realising our aims and objectives.
What you’ll get out of it...

It may sound cheesy, (and yes, you've heard it in the past) but we’re genuinely intent on creating a judgement-free and safe environment where people can bring their whole, authentic selves.
Members of York Together are intent on keeping it a protected and ‘safe space’, and you will be encouraged to be yourself and speak your mind.
This is a different way of working, so support will be available to all members to ensure they become comfortable with the concept of having their voices heard and stepping into their own autonomy.
Along with learning some new and different conflict resolution skills, you’ll also make connections with other like-minded individuals, share power, knowledge and resources.
The values we uphold...

The York Together members are what makes this group different.
Our founding members hoped to create a space that is genuinely inclusive and where people are valued and can speak their minds.
The members of the group are responsible for ensuring we maintain these values - as well as those of compassion, curiosity, community, courage and integrity.
It’s important we always come back to these values when thinking about how we interact with one another, the decisions we make, and in tackling any challenges.
Time commitment...

We think it’s important that members engage thoroughly and enthusiastically with the group and attend all monthly meetings.
This is so that we meet our quorum (minimum number of members required in order to fairly vote on decisions), and so we ensure we get everyone’s input and ideas.

As well as monthly meetings, the time commitment also includes some ad-hoc time reading certain materials, and actioning anything required from the meetings.
We’re aware that our members (who are largely advocates and activists in the community) will often be time-poor and may already have many other commitments. We therefore try to keep between-meetings communication minimal and take a considerate and respectful approach to everyone’s time.
Getting everyone involved:

Being a member is a voluntary role, similar in some ways to being a trustee on a board of a charity, and we’re aware that this may restrict some people from becoming involved, especially those who have direct experience of financial hardship and issues related to poverty. We are currently considering how we can ensure that absolutely everyone can participate, either as a member or through other roles and how they could be compensated for their time through payment for involvement processes.
