Join us for the first STEWdent and Song event as part of the York Environment Festival 2026. With this event we’re aiming to provide a feast for your ears, voice, belly and mind. |  |
Come along to give students of York St John University (YSJ) the chance to win extra funding for climate action projects already in progress. Whether they need to change their approach, or keep on growing.
This event is brought to you by York St John (YSJ) Living Lab and Singing Resistance.
100% of the funds raised through ticket sales will support Friendly Living Fund projects.

An event of four parts:
Step 1: Singing | Join us from 4pm for a singing workshop to learn simple, beautiful and powerful sings of climate resilience. This will be led by Singing Resistance York. Those who do not want to participate in the singing workshop are free to join us from 5pm onward. |
Step 2: Eating | At 5pm dinner is served - grab some delicious vegan stew and a drink (included in the ticket price), and settle down to chat with like-minded people who care deeply about climate change. |
Step 3: Listening and Learning | You will then hear from 3 YSJ student groups, all who have had initial funding from the Friendly Living Fund, and are ready to take the next steps in growing their climate resilience projects. Each group will each have just 4 minutes to pitch how they would like to move forward - whether this is growing what they are already doing or exploring different ways of working. |
Step 4: Voting | You will then cast your vote on which project you think will benefit young people and the climate the most! |
Singing together to resist
Singing Resistance York are a community singing initiative that aims to create solidarity and connection, and builds resilience against the far-right and social injustice. You can see them on Instagram here.
They'll begin the event with a 45-minute workshop to build a community atmosphere, where attendees are invited to learn powerful songs of climate resilience together.
The prize pot
100% of the donations will support Friendly Living Fund projects.
We are currently thinking that £100 will go to the winner, £50 will go to each runner up and then the remaining funds will go to the Friendly Living Fund.
We know that everyone's financial situation is different and so (to make this event accessible to as many people as possible) we're offering a 'pay what you can' ticket system. Please contribute what feels right for you.
Whats on the menu
We will provide you with a drink (water or fruit juice) and a yummy polish bean stew - which is vegan, along with some bread.
Stew ingredients: vegetables, beans, spices, pea protein.
Dietary information: The stew is gluten-free.
Why come along?
The climate crisis has never been more visible and it can feel overwhelming at how little is being done to address its impacts and causes. We need more events that tackle this issue and bring it to the surface.
STEWdent and Song provides a space for people to come together in solidarity and hope. To not only sing, eat and talk together, but also hear young people's vision for climate justice.
Pitchers from YSJ University already have projects up and running that have been funded by the Living Lab's Friendly Living Fund, and their mission on the night is to let us know what they've learnt and how extra funding will allow them to grow or change.
We're hoping the event will bring people together in solidarity and hope. To not only sing, eat and talk together, but also hear young people's vision for climate justice.
Opportunity for learning
We are committed to trying different ways of gathering learning as well as different ways to get money to projects run by individuals and grassroots groups in York. This is the first time we've collaborated with York St John University to provide young people and their projects with funding.
We want to hear feedback from people before, during and after the event to help us learn what worked and what could be better. We also want to understand who has been excluded from this format.

Parking
There is no parking for any vehicles on site and ANPR cameras are in operation 24/7.
We have a small number of Blue Badge spaces available, these spaces can only be used if guests have pre registered their number plates by emailing events@yorksj.ac.uk.
Registering your details does not guarantee a space, as they operate on a first come, first served basis. Please ensure your blude badge is displayed clearly in the vehicle.
Exhibition Square bus stop is a 3 minute walk away.
